The  President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, has posthumously conferred the Medaglia d’Oro al Merito Civile on Giorgio La Pira, M.P., on the occasion of the centenary of his birth and for the following reasons:

One of the most symbolic figures in contemporary Italian history, Giorgio La Pira was an outstanding jurist, a courageous man intensely committed to the rebirth of democratic institutions in the Constituent Assembly where, in the formulation of the fundamental principles of the Republic, he played a very important role.

“Being himself of the most lofty human, civic and political principles, Giorgio La Pira, in the important and arduous posts which he occupied, was constantly inspired by the values of freedom of religion, solidarity, social justice and dialogue between the various faiths.

“An eminent paradigm of determined commitment to a new humanism founded on peaceful co-existence between peoples and intense participation in the sufferings of others.”
